Sentence delayed for Moffitt killer

Ottawa - A judge will decide the fate of Andrew Moffitt's killer a week from Thursday.

Moffitt's mother says all the waiting has been hard for the family
Henry Danninger pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November, nearly four years after stabbing Moffitt to death in an Ottawa bar.

Moffitt was 23 years old. He was trying to stop a fight between Danninger and another man at the bar when he was stabbed.

Lawyers argued yesterday over what Danninger's sentence should be. People in the courtroom sighed audibly when the judge said he would put off his decision.

The defence lawyer's other court commitments have already caused long delays.

Andrew Moffitt's mother, Paulette, says all the waiting has been hard for her family, especially her youngest son, Michael.

"I tell Michael all the time we have to be patient," she says. "Justice is going to come, and I pray to God justice does come. So we'll be patient a bit longer. We go from day to day. That's the way it is for us."

The prosecutor in the case is calling for a 10-year sentence.

Danninger plans to make his own statement to the judge next week, before his punishment is decided.
